Perform a critical role to lead + enhance the HSW advisory function, driving a great safety culture.


Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role


Reporting to the Head of Health, Safety and Well-being within the wider People Delivery team, you will be responsible for the strategic leadership of the health, safety and wellbeing advisory function including the continuous development and implementation of a HSW strategy and providing expert advice to stakeholders across the Ministry on HSW matters. As part of this role you will also provide people leadership to the HSW advisory team of advisors and senior advisors to provide frontline health, safety and wellbeing advisory to our people based here at home and abroad.   


The appointment range for this role is $134,052.00 - $181,364.00 total remuneration including employer contribution to kiwisaver – negotiable depending on experience.

This is not a Foreign Policy/diplomatic role.  This is a ‘Corporate’ role (known here as a Specialist role) based in central Wellington, NZ.  


While it is not usual for specialist staff to be ‘posted’ outside of NZ, from time to time a specialist role overseas becomes available at one of our embassies, high commissions, missions or consulates. If you're an experienced Health, Safety and Wellbeing expert with people leadership experience, have the ability to influence, communicate and lead effectively across an organisation with a variety of stakeholders, enjoy variety in your day, and working closely with other health, safety and well-being professionals, you might be exactly the person we're looking for!


You’ll have:

  • Demonstrated experience in leading Health, Safety and Wellbeing teams within a large and complex organisation.
  • Sound knowledge and expertise in health and safety management legislation, codes of practice and standards, and a sound understanding of the approaches needed to successfully protect health and safety in the workplace.
  • Experience coaching and developing high performing teams.
  • Experience in the development and implementation of safety, quality, risk and compliance systems.
  • Significant experience in managing cross functional projects which involve multiple and diverse business teams and stakeholders 
  • Demonstrated strong stakeholder focus with the ability to build constructive and effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong business acumen with a practical focus as well as a commitment to business improvement and ability to deliver results.
